Cutoff strikes fear even into the most advanced riders.
What an EUC Cutoff is and how to prevent it
In the world of electric unicycles (EUCs), the term „cutoff" refers to a situation where the EUC loses the ability to keep its balance and stay upright.
What leads to a cutoff and how do you prevent it?
Understanding the causes of a cutoff is essential for the safe operation of an EUC.
Main causes of a cutoff
- Overloading the unicycle
- exceeding the unicycle's maximum speed
- accelerating too quickly (leaning too much) on the unicycle
- due to not understanding the machine's maximum limits
- with a flat battery
- with a cold battery
- when exceeding the device's maximum weight limit
- riding up a steep slope for a longer time, which causes the mainboard to overheat and fail
- riding in the rain. Water ingress damages the mainboard
- „jumping" the wheel and leaving it hanging in the air too long
- an impact to the wheel, which causes a wire connection to come loose
- going down stairs too fast, so the wheel has little contact with the steps and spins too quickly
- Mechanical failure of the main components
With the exception of the last scenario, which is very rare and hard to predict, most situations are created by users and can be avoided by adjusting riding behaviour and taking better care of the device.
More than 90% of cutoffs and the falls that follow are caused by rider error. Try to understand the limits and specifics of riding a unicycle, and above all the limits of your machine. Never ignore it when the unicycle communicates with you - tiltbacks, beeping, and above all the simple feeling that it just doesn't want to anymore.
Ways to prevent a cutoff
- watch out for warning beeps, pay special attention in noisy environments
- regularly check the battery level and your riding speed
- pay attention to tiltbacks, which are designed to signal the user to slow down or recharge
- charge the wheel sufficiently before a long ride
- avoid riding in the rain and other adverse weather conditions
- avoid straining the wheel with constant and excessive speed, twisting and jumping
- regularly carry out an MOT on your wheel
Try to listen to your unicycle, take care of it, and the wheel will take care of you.
